Gates that don't sag

Most gate problems start with a post that is too light or not deep enough. Gates are hung on heavier posts, braced against sag, and fitted with hinges and latches sized for their weight.

  • Walk and side-yard gates with self-closing hinges
  • Double drive gates for RVs, boats and equipment
  • Sliding and swing driveway gates in steel or wood
  • Automatic openers with remotes and keypads
  • Pool gates: self-closing, self-latching hardware
  • Farm and equipment gates for acreage

A security or driveway gate typically costs about $1,200–$8,500 installed, per HomeGuide — security gate cost. A simple walk gate is usually priced into the fence itself.

  • Width and material (wood, vinyl, chain-link, steel, aluminum)
  • Swing vs. sliding track
  • Automatic opener, safety sensors and access controls

FAQ

Fence questions, answered

Can you add a gate to my existing fence?

Usually yes. The section is cut out, heavier gate posts are set in concrete and the gate is built to match the fence.

Do automatic driveway gates need a permit?

Gates themselves usually follow the same height rules as fences, but the electrical work for an opener often needs an electrical permit. Your city or the county permit center can confirm.

Why does my wood gate sag?

Most sag comes from an undersized or loose hinge post, or a missing diagonal brace. A heavier post and an anti-sag kit or proper brace usually fix it.

How tall can my fence be in Salinas?

The City of Salinas ordinance booklet says front and side-yard fences are limited to three feet and rear-yard fences are generally six feet, and no fence may exceed eight feet without city approval. Corner lots and driveways have visibility rules. Other cities set their own limits — the City of Monterey fence standards, for example, cap most fences at six feet. Check with the City of Salinas Permit Center before you build.
